BANGKOK, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two villagers were killed in a land mine explosion in a Thai-Cambodian border area of eastern Thailand on Tuesday, police said.

The two Thai villagers, identified as Charoon Khieuphromma, 70, and Phongsak Khieuphromma, 37, were riding in a tractor on the Thai-Cambodian border in Nong Ya Kaeo village in Khok Sung district of Sa Kaeo province when the vehicle accidentally ran over the land mine, which immediately blasted and killed them, said deputy police superintendent Pol. Lt. Col. Sarote Vejjakama.

The anti-tank mine had been apparently laid just under the surface of the grassy land along the Thai-Cambodian border several decades ago, according to the police colonel.

Land mines, many of which were believed to be still effective, are yet to be disposed of by authorities on both sides of the shared border, he said.
