World No. 9 Kiki Bertens announced Tuesday that she underwent Achilles tendon surgery and will miss the beginning of the 2021 season, including the Australian Open.
The 28-year old Bertens said in an Instagram post that she was hindered by the injury throughout 2020. The Netherlands native posted a picture of herself in an Amsterdam hospital bed and showing the left leg in a cast.
"Some of you might know that I already had an Achilles injury for some time," Bertens wrote in her post. "The only possibility for me to play without pain again and get the maximum out of trainings and matches was to get a surgery. So that's what I did now!"
Bertens played in the recent French Open, winning three matches before losing in straight sets to Martina Trevisan of Italy.
Bertens has won 10 career singles titles. Her best showing in a Grand Slam event came in 2016 when he reached the semifinals of the French Open before losing to Serena Williams
Bertens' career-high ranking of No. 4 was achieved in 2019.
