BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TRIPOLI -- The National Center for Disease Control of Libya on Sunday reported 945 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the national tally to 48,790.

The center said in a statement that 26 more patients have died, taking the country's death toll to 725, while the nationwide recoveries totaled 26,889, up by 827.

CAPE TOWN -- South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and his wife tested positive for COVID-19, his office said in a statement late on Sunday.

"I am now in quarantine at home and both my wife and I remain optimistic that we will fully recover from this virus," Mkhize was quoted as saying in the statement.

BEIJING -- No new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported Sunday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Monday.

A total of 13 confirmed cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported, the commission said in its daily report.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil on Sunday reported 230 more people died from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the past day, raising the death toll to 153,905.

According to the Ministry of Health, tests detected 10,982 new cases of infection in the same period, bringing the total number of confirmed cases since the onset of the outbreak to 5,235,344.

ROME -- The Italian government on Sunday evening approved fresh anti-COVID-19 measures as more than 11,000 new infections were reported over the past 24 hours.

"The curve of contagion is worrisome, the numbers are serious, and there is a need to intervene urgently," Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said during a nationally televised press conference.

RAMALLAH -- A senior Palestinian official has been moved to an Israeli hospital in Jerusalem after his health deteriorated because of his infection with the novel coronavirus, Palestinian and Israeli sources said on Sunday.

Saeb Erekat, secretary of the Palestine Liberation Organization, who received treatment at his house in Jericho, has suffered from deterioration in his health condition, Jihad Abu al-Assal, Palestinian governor of the Jordan Valley area, told Xinhua.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported eight new cases of COVID-19 infection on Sunday, raising its total confirmed cases to 1,134 with 35 deaths from the disease so far, according to its Ministry of Health.

The eight new cases, who are Vietnamese and Australian citizens, have recently entered the country from abroad and were quarantined upon arrival, said the ministry, noting that one of them is a 7-month-old boy.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday with the national tally of cases standing at 147.

According to Brunei's Ministry of Health, no more recoveries were recorded, maintaining the total number of recovered cases at 143. There is still one active case being treated at the National Isolation Center, who was recorded on Oct. 14.
