PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Friday lashed out at two U.S. politicians for interfering in the country's domestic affairs after they called for the release of jailed activists.

LONDON -- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering the introduction of new national restrictions as his country is struggling to get a handle on the spread of coronavirus, local media reported Friday.

GENEVA -- The list of candidates running to become the next director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) was narrowed to five after 164 members completed the first round of consultations, the WTO said on Friday.

They are Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria, Yoo Myung-hee from the Republic of Korea, Amina Mohamed from Kenya, Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri from Saudi Arabia, and Liam Fox from Britain. (Switzerland-WTO-URGENT)

AYBAK, Afghanistan -- Taliban attack to overrun the restive Dara-e-Suf Payan district in Afghanistan's northern Samangan province has been repulsed and the militants retreated after leaving 13 bodies behind, the provincial police headquarters said in a statement released here Friday.

The armed insurgents, according to the statement, launched multi-pronged offensive on security checkpoints in Dara-e-Suf Payan district early Friday morning, but police backed by army and fighting planes responded to the attack, killing 13 insurgents on the spot and wounding five others.
