DAVAO CITY, December 5, (PIA)- Dabawenyo athletes representing the Philippines in different sports were able to win medals during the early days of the 30th SEA Games competitions.
Jezebel Morcillo of the country's arnis team won a gold medal in the women's 50 Kilograms Live Stick Division. Morcillo won over Nguyen ThiHoung of Vietnam in the finals.
Meanwhile in Kurash, Jenilou Mosqueda won silver in the women's Kurash 57-kilogram division.
Fellow Dabawenya Sydney Sy Tancontian won the bronze medal in the women's Kurash 70 kilogram division.
Kurash is a form of folk wrestling which originated in Central Asia. Mosqueda and Tancontian competed in other disciplines before representing the country in Kurash. Tancontian was the 2017 SEA Games Judo bronze medalist, while Mosqueda was a Judo silver medalist in the 2013 SEA Games.
The three Dabawenyas medal haul has contributed to the historic performance of the Philippines which is currently at the number one spot with 41 golds, 21 silvers and 14 bronzes (as of 1:00 p.m. Dec. 3).
The country hopes to secure the overall championship of the 30th staging of the SEA Games, aiming to duplicate the 2005 achievement when for the first time the Philippines got the most number of medals in the biennial sporting event in the region. (PIA/RG Alama)
